🇨🇭 Hidden Switzerland — Beyond the Classic Route

Rhine Falls, an alpine adventure base at Engelberg, and the Matterhorn's own village — the other side of Switzerland from the classic Interlaken loop.

📍 Where to start: Zurich

Zurich is the base for this route, not Basel, Interlaken or Geneva. It's the closest major airport to the Rhine Falls (40 min), and it sits at the top of a north-to-south line through Engelberg to Zermatt — so there's no backtracking. Basel is nearly as close to the Falls but has fewer long-haul flights; Interlaken has no airport; Geneva is at the opposite end of the country.

🚆 Road trip or train?

Train is the better fit for this route. Zermatt bans private cars entirely (you'd park in Täsch and shuttle in regardless), and the Zurich–Engelberg–Zermatt line is a smooth one-way rail corridor. A car only really pays off if you're combining this with the separate Road Trip itinerary — for this route alone, skip the rental.

✨ Behind the Journey — D4Explore Snapshot

  • 💳 Which pass to buy: the Swiss Half Fare Card (CHF 150) — it matches the Swiss Travel Pass's 50% off both Titlis and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, but costs less than the 6-day Swiss Travel Pass this route would otherwise need.
  • 🚆 Why train beats car here: Zermatt is car-free regardless, and the route is a straight line, not a loop — a car adds cost without adding flexibility.
  • 🌤️ Save Zermatt for clear skies: if the forecast shifts, swap Day 2 and Day 4 — Titlis is a shorter, lower-stakes trip to shuffle around bad weather.
  • 🥾 Both mountain days have a walking fallback: Trübsee lake at Engelberg and the Zmutt trail at Zermatt, if you'd rather hike than ride.
